Genetics of large populations in epilepsy: Association studies – Trials and tribulations
نویسنده
چکیده
Unlike Mendelian epilepsies, complex epilepsies may be due to the effect of several or multiple susceptibility genes. Association studies have been used in the past decade to help identify common genetic variants underpinning complex epilepsies. However, as the data in the Epilepsy Genetic Association Database (epiGAD) show, many of these studies have been negative, or have shown confl icting results. Overall, most putative gene-disease associations are weak. Inadequate sample size is the most likely cause. Multicentre collaborations are vital. Neurology Asia 2011; 16 (Supplement 1) : 9 – 10

Mammary tumor associated Hspb1 mutation and screening of eight cat populations of the world
Current research highlights the Hspb1 based screening of eight cat populations of the world to investigate the association of newly found locus within cat mammary tumors. Total 180 cats were screened on the basis of Hspb1 4 bp deletion locus (1514-1517del4) which was observed in six mammary tumor cases in Siamese cat breed. Case-control association study revealed the non-significance with P=0.2...
متن کاملAssociation between ABCB1-T1236C Polymorphism and Drug-Resistant Epilepsy in Iranian Female Patients
Background: One third of epileptic patients are resistant to several anti-epileptic drugs (AED). P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is an efflux transporter encoded by ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) gene that excludes drugs from the cells and plays a significant role in AEDs resistance. Over-expression of P-gp could be a result of polymorphisms in ABCB1 gene. We studied the association of...
متن کاملAssociation between two functional polymorphisms in the MMP-2 promoter and lung cancer incidence in Asian population: a meta-analysis study
Background: Numerous experiments have been performed to determine the relationship between the Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) -1306C/T and -735C/T polymorphisms and the prevalence and progression of lung cancer in diverse populations. However, due to the small sample size and the different results of previous studies, we decided to perform a general meta-analysis on all previous studies abo...
متن کاملReview on the role of host genetic factors in the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2
Background: Severe acute respiratory system Cov-2 pandemic has affected the world populations for more than one year. Different incidence and severity of this viral disease among various age range and individuals with different background disease may indicate the pivotal role of host genetic factors in their prevalence and mortality rate. In this regards, present study was performed to review t...
متن کاملGenome Wide Association Studies, Next Generation Sequencing and Their Application in Animal Breeding and Genetics: A Review
Recently genetic studies have been revolutionized by next generation sequencing (NGS) technology, and it is expected that the use of this technology will largely eliminate defects in the methods of association studies. The NGS technology is becoming the premier tool in genetics. However, at the moment the use of this method is limited especially in the livestock due to high cost and computation...
